Body Image & Self Esteem Workshop

Workshop Overview

Body image is:

What you believe and feel about your body and physical appearance. Body image is influenced by friends, family members, cultural standards and commercial advertising.

Body image is independent of body size and shape. It is also independent of your actual physical appearance. Any person of any physical description can have either a positive or negative body image.

Body image is often closely linked to self-esteem.

Self-esteem is:

How much you value and accept yourself, how worthwhile you feel and the extent to which you feel loved and accepted by others.

Promoting positive body image can improve an individuals self esteem and overall happiness.

Facts about body image and self esteem

"Only 3% of women in the UK are happy with their body"
Image survey commissioned by REAL magazine

"A woman's body shape dominates her whole life - it's a modern day obsession. One of the driving forces is that women are increasingly influenced by celebrities - who let's face it don't live a normal life - and it can make a cruel comparison for real women trying to juggle work and family"
Sian Rees, editor of REAL magazine

The survey of 5,000 women found that eight out of 10 women thought their lives would improve considerably if they lost weight. In an attempt to achieve the perfect body, 86 per cent have tried dieting, on average 32 times, with one in 10 saying they are permanently on a diet. 25% of all women have tried slimming pills, 25 per cent have also fasted and four out of 10 said they have suffered an eating disorder".
