- Intervention
-
- Intervention is a popular recovery tool. An intervention generally refers
- to a planned gathering of people who know the addict and who want to offer
- help and support i.e. intervene to stop the addiction. The group consists of friends, family, co-workers, church members .... in short anyone who has a close relationship with the addict. One of the groups roles is to gently confront the addict about their behaviour.
-
- It is generally believed that the ability to openly discuss feelings and share
- experiences, in this two-way forum, will enable the addict to feel safe and admit
- their problems, while at the same time receiving necessary encouragement and
- support.
-
- The intervention team will form part of the addicts support network. Each member shares his or her own experiences with the addict and the problems arising from the addiction. And in turn, each shares their love, support and offer encouragement for recovery as well as any healing resources or tools that they have.
Trained support staff will also be available to help the intervention group. A typical 3-stage intervention program is outlined below.
Stage I - Telephone coaching - A trained professional provide
- encouragement, agree on the members that will form the group and draws up
- the intervention plan. They will also devise a strategy aimed at successfully
- carrying out the plan, gather the intervention team together and inform them
- about their goals and detail the plan will be executed.
Stage II – This stage generally occurs before any treatment has began.
- During it, the individual that is responsible for bring the team together and the
- associated professional counsellor's will meet on several occasions to
- determine the best way to implement the plan. The addict is not present at
- this stage. The main goals are to educate, support and develop a plan of
- action that includes support/treatment for those seeking help for the addict
- first.
Stage III – Here the intervention team members and the addict are brought
- together and counselled in a sympathetic and supportive atmosphere.
The 3-stage program will provide long term help for the addict and their intervention group.
